Bajaj Auto plans DTSi bike soon

For the first time in the country, the powerful Digital Twin Spark ignition (DTSi) technology will be available in a 100 cc motor bike. Two-wheeler major, Bajaj Auto is planning to replicate the DTSi technology on its 100 cc Platina. A DTSi Platina is expected to be out in the market in the next couple of years. DTSi technology boosts the performance of the engine, while simultaneously cutting emissions. The technology enhances the pick-up of the vehicle. The technology is so far available only with the engines of high end bikes like Pulsar (180/150 cc) and Discover (125 cc). DTSi is a patented technology from Bajaj. When contacted, Bajaj officials refused to comment on the development. However, sources close to the company, said its (Bajaj's) R&D division is working on the project. DTSi incorporates twin sparkplugs at either ends of the combustion chamber for faster and better combustion. Entry level bikes have single sparkplug, which means slower burning of the air-fuel mixture and sub-optimal combustion chamber characteristics. Currently, the Platina comes with value additions such as alloy wheel, designs and shades normally seen in high-end bikes. Platina's development with value additions keeps in mind the changing aspiration of the 100 cc customers, who are gradually shifting to value added bikes. "It will be revolutionary if Bajaj is successful in incorporating the DTSi technology to Platina. The development supports the changing customer mindset in the entry level segment," said a leading Mumbai-based two-wheeler analyst. Bajaj Platina is currently priced at Rs 35,000 onwards, which is higher by Rs 3,000-4,000 compared to regular entry level bikes like CT-100 or CD Dawn. A DTSi Platina would be dearer by a couple of thousand rupees. Value addition is a very recent phenomena in the 100 cc segment. TVS is another player who has introduced the value added TVS Star City.
